Ollis story helped me to see how the lives of former East Germans changed so dramatically after the wall fell. Olli had trouble assimilating into western ways of life. The prejudices against the east made it difficult to smooth the transition from communism to capitilism. His life was essentially turned completely upside down after die Wende.
Biene's father fleeing to the west was based on fact. Many east German leaders fled to the west, and even out of the country, in order to escape the damage the failure of their system would cause to their social lives. Most likely, they would have been ostracized by their own people.
