Kapitel 3

This must have been an extremely confusing time for many east German people.  Some were enthusiastic about the reunification of Germany, while others were not so happy about such a huge change.  Their way of life was completely altered, and most of their leaders had fled in order to avoid the social implications of being a former higher-up in a communistic society.  Life was not going to get easier for them, as some of them believed.  They only saw the aspect of "being free" without really knowing what that meant.  Trying to assimilate into western ways would be difficult, and that was recognized by people such as Olli's father in the book.  The opinions on the reunification vary greatly.

  1. Yes, they do. Even today opinions vary greatly about what was the good, the bad and the ugly, about east Germany, Die Wende and now.
